Non-ANC politicians quiet in the media

President Thabo Mbeki emerged as the most quoted politician in leading SA media in 2004, outstripping all other politicians. He was quoted 9 739 times more than Jacob Zuma, Trevor Manuel, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, Tony Leon and Martinus van Schalkwyk collectively.

Opposition leader Tony Leon was the most quoted non-government politician with 1 541 quotes, giving him the fifth position overall. Deputy President Jacob Zuma took second place (2 481 quotes), followed by Finance Minister Trevor Manuel with 2 201 quotes. The top female politician was Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang with Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma in eight position and Patricia de Lille from the Independent Democrats in ninth.
